Learning Motivation & Learning Achievement
“Motivation” is seem as a goal oriented behavior, which presupposes 3 essential elements.
Favorable attitudes
Desire
Effort
“Self-motivated(自发)” would mean that you have the 4 elements in yourself
Goal

Favorable attitude/orientation
I would like to compare self-motivation to an electricity generation. (发电机)
Highly-motivated students will show the following aspects of language behavior.
1) Willingness to undertake language study.
2) Continued effort to learn.
3) Tolerance of frustration & failure.
4) Taking risks to experiment with the language.
5) Ability to manage learning anxiety.
Characteristics of the Good Language Learner:
1) Willing and accurate guesser, comfortable with uncertainty.
2) Strong desire to communicate, trying his\her best to get the message across.
3) Not afraid of making mistakes in order to learn.
4) Prepared to pay attention to the formal features of language, grammar and vocabulary choice.
5) Finding opporunities, inside & outside class, to practice what has been learnt, eg. Looking for native speakers.
6) Sensitive to own and other people’s language.
7) Attention to meaning and to the context of the language.
8) Extra attention to accurate pronunciation\ clear articulation.
9) Read books\magazines in English to extend language horizons.
10) Interactive learning with partner.
11) Determined and motivated to learn the language.
12) Willing to invest time & effort to sustain language learning.
Even high-teens can learn a foreign language well, if they set their mind to do it!
